Born near Manchester in 1930, Peter Hebblethwaite joined the Jesuits in 1948 at the age of seventeen. As editor of the Jesuit periodical, The Month, from 1965, he was involved in reporting the major ecclesiastical events of the following decade. He travelled widely, and had a special interest in Poland. In January 1974 he received special permission to resign from the Jesuits, but remained on friendly terms with them. His many books include The Runaway Church, The Year of Three Popes, The New Inquisition? and Introducing John Paul II. He died 18 December 1994 aged 64 and was married with three children.
